MIGRAIN 3 Assessment - Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Excellent, frequent reference to theroies/theorists
EBI: Check your undestanding of Gauntlett

17/20 (A grade :) )

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the number of marks you achieved for the two questions: _/8; _/12. If you didn't achieve full marks in a question, write a bullet point on what you may have missed.

For question 1 I was awarded 7/8 marks and I believe this could have been an 8/8 if i included or mentioned the costume of the man and the lack of a tie and socks which creates an overall informal agenda. This reflects David Gauntlett's idea that masculinity is evolving due to changing representations in the mass media.

For question 2 I was awarded 10/12 marks. I missed out marks by not talking about the fact that the advertising campaign itself reflected an overall traditional approach to representation which opposes other current advertising campaigns in today's society. This can be linked to the cultural backlash against 'woke' causes.

3) For Question 2 on the social and cultural contexts of gender representations, identify three potential points in the mark scheme that you didn't include in your answer.

One point that I didn't include was naming a theorist (Judith Butler) who is involved in gender trouble. Judith argues that gender is culturally and socially constructed rather than being natural which is reflected in the advert as we are conditioned to adhere to social norms.

Another point to include next time would be that the advertising campaign can be seen as an attempt to reclaim traditional gender roles in response to an increasing tolerance of gender fluidity and being anything you want to identify as.

A 3rd and final point would be that the campaign strongly reinforces classic gender stereotypes which links to other campaigns such as Gillette's "boys will be boys" advert which went viral as it attacked/challenged toxic masculinity.

4) Having read the whole mark scheme, pick out one media theory that you didn't include in this assessment and summarise it briefly here so you can use it confidently in future.

Judith Butler, suggested that gender is socially and culturally constructed rather than being natural ie biological through hormones, chromosomes.

5) Based on your experience in this assessment, identify three aspects of Media (e.g. skills/particular theories/examples) that you need to work on for your next assessment.

More analysis of theories could be helpful, fully understanding David Gauntlett and his theory and also exploring thoroughly both sides of an argument.
